Reclaiming the Basement: A Kid’s Art Studio

8 Feb

It turns out that our small house can actually live a lot larger than it’s marketable square footage suggests. In an effort to find some more space for the kids to play, I transformed an area of our basement that was previously cluttered with junk and depressingly dark and ugly. Read my latest feature in the Kitsap Sun for more details on how I organized the space. We now have a bright art studio and small play area as well, giving us room to breathe and grow, for a few more years, anyway. You can make the most of the space you have too, with a little creative thinking and DIY ingenuity.

Here are some photos of the new area, before and after the changes.

This month for the Kitsap Sun, I wrote about the importance of taking time to be crafty with your kids and of slowing down to appreciate time with family and friends. Making a mason jar snow globe with your munchkins is so simple and creates lasting fun. Decorating the table for a holiday meal can be both easy and elegant, while enhancing your enjoyment of spending time with loved ones! Have a lovely, cozy holiday.

Creating a Central Work Station

Last Sunday, my monthly column for the Kitsap Sun was about how I created an office workstation in my dining room. After months of dealing with piles and clutter and facing the fact that my basement office nook was not useful to me, I finally took stock of my needs and made a spot to work right in the middle of the action! Subscribers can read how here, but for those of you don’t- some photos of what I did to make it happen!
